A permanent perimeter soil nailed retention system allows the playing field to be located 50 feet below street level, offering fans a panoramic view of the field upon entering the stadium. The seating bowl structure consists of cast-in place concrete moment frames, cast-in place concrete pan joist floor framing, and precast concrete seating units. Each of the end zones are enclosed with 180 feet wide by 120 feet high five panel glass retractable doors that open in 18 minutes to connect the building interior spaces to adjacent outdoor plaza areas. Suites are situated in eight different locations on five separate levels, including field level suites just 20 rows from the playing field.
The new Cowboys Stadium is the fifth retractable roof stadium designed by Walter P Moore with mechanization design by Uni-Systems. In contrast to college football stadiums, the largest of which can and regularly do accommodate over 100,000 spectators, no stadium in the league currently has a listed seating capacity of more than 82,500. In the opposite direction, the league has a firm minimum on the number of seats an NFL stadium should have; since 1971 the league has not allowed any stadium under 50,000 seats to host a full-time NFL team. With a seating capacity of 65,000, the stadium is designed to host both sporting events and concerts.
How many NFL stadiums are enclosed It is equipped with a movable tray, which allows the use of both natural grass and artificial turf playing surfaces. The retractable natural turf field is used for the NFL while the artificial turf surface is intended for UNLV. In August 2007, the Chiefs unveiled a massive renovation plan, keeping Arrowhead Stadium up to par with the newest stadiums in the NFL. This project also included the construction of the Horizons Level atop the upper deck on the south side of the stadium that included a new pressbox, luxury suites and premium seats. Located on the lower-level concourse, the 28,000 square-foot Chiefs Hall of Honor, highlights great teams and players, and exhibits artifacts from the Chiefs' history. New HD video/scoreboards replaced the existing scoreboards located above the stands in both endzones.
It's the NFL's most historic stadium, the Yankee Stadium of the NFL, home to the best fans in the NFL and one of the most storied franchises in sports, the Green Bay Packers. Lambeau Field has been the home of the Green Bay Packers for more than six decades and four Super Bowl Champion teams. From the Packers inception in the 1920s until 1956, the team played at East Stadium. After the 1952 season, the team shifted some of its games to the new County Stadium in Milwaukee. The stadium eventually became home of the Milwaukee Braves and later the Milwaukee Brewers. By 1955, the NFL threatened to move the Packers permanently to Milwaukee's County Stadium, if a new stadium was not built for the team in Green Bay to replace City Stadium.
The primary problem with the stadium was its limited seating capacity of only 25,000. In 1956, a bond was approved allowing construction of a new football stadium in Green Bay. Named City Stadium, the new facility was completed in just one year. The Packers played their first game at City Stadium on September 29, 1957 against the Chicago Bears. City Stadium had a capacity of 32,000 when it opened and it was the first stadium built specifically for a NFL team. Although the Packers had a new stadium in Green Bay the team continued to play several games at County Stadium in Milwaukee until 1994.
Today, after nearly five decades of existence, Arrowhead Stadium remains one of the most popular stadiums in the NFL. The history of the club began in Dallas when they were known as the Texans. Owner Lamar Hunt moved the team to Kansas City in 1963, renaming them the Chiefs. For nearly a decade, the Chiefs shared an aging Municipal Stadium with the Athletics and Royals .
Original plans were for a multipurpose stadium, but were scrapped because of design and seating capacity issues. Unlike many other cities that built multipurpose stadiums during this time, the county decided to build two new stadiums, one for baseball and one for football. In June 1967, a $102 million bond was issued for construction of two sports stadiums.
Construction on the Truman Sports Complex began on July 11, 1968. A rolling roof was part of the original design for both stadiums, but did not materialize because of cost overruns and of potential project delays. Allegiant Stadium is the 1.8 million-square-foot world-class home of the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas college football team. A dome also requires turf, and there's a big debate between the effects of natural grass and artificial turf. There were no domed stadiums until 1962, a few NFL stadiums predate it, so requiring every team to use a dome is unrealistic.
Plus it's tough to upgrade a domed stadium to add extra luxury boxes or seats. That being said, 4 of the last 6 new NFL stadiums have retractable roofs, so they are becoming more common. Only domed and retractable roof stadiums are included, i.e. stadiums that cover both spectators and playing field. Wembley Stadium in London, which seats 90,000 spectators, is not included as the roof can only be partially closed. The stadiums are divided into current stadiums, closed stadiums, and future stadiums (those currently under-construction and those planned for construction). Meeting the challenge to provide the Raiders with a real grass field in the desert, the facility also features a retractable field system.
This feature provides the stadium with the versatility of using both natural grass and artificial turf playing surfaces. Nicknamed the "Eighth Wonder of the World," the Astrodome was built to protect an entire sports area suitable for baseball and football, with seating for 66,000 spectators. The Lucite-paneled dome, spanning 642 feet , is supported by a steel lattice.
The entire interior is air-conditioned at 74 °F (23 °C) and fully lighted with power from its own electricity-generating system. The playing field, constructed 30 feet below grade, spans 150,000 square feet. Globe Life Field is a baseball park in Arlington, Texas, US, built under a public-private partnership between the City of Arlington and the Texas Rangers of Major League Baseball . Spanning 1.8MMSF, it features a specially designed synthetic grass playing surface and a 5.5-acre retractable roof, which is the world's largest single-panel operable roof. Club seats are located along both sidelines of the playing field, offering optimal sightlines and exclusive amenities.
Televisions are available throughout the club floor for viewing stadium games. The Saints are the only team to have won a Super Bowl at home, a domed stadium. Miami's Hard Rock Stadium hosted the championship game, and the Colts' home games were played in a retractable roof stadium. The ten-level domed stadium features a seven-acre translucent ETFE roof that protects players and fans from heat. It also includes a 27,600ft² media mesh video screen facing Interstate 15 for videos and images to be displayed for people outside the stadium, and large retractable curtain-like side windows facing the Las Vegas Strip. Since its opening in 1957, fans attending games have seen many expansions occur.
By 1961, the capacity at City Stadium increased to over 38,000. Two years later, the capacity was once again increased to over 42,000. In 1965, City Stadium was renamed Lambeau Field, after the death of the Packers founder, E.L.
During the same year, the stadium's capacity was increased to 50,852. Once this addition was completed, Lambeau Field had its basic shape as the entire field was enclosed by seats. In 1985, 72 luxury suites were added, along with additional seating areas, bringing the capacity to over 56,000. In 1990, even more additions were made including 80 more luxury suites were added along with over 1,900 club seats along the top rim of the stadium.
In 1993, the first video/scoreboard was installed above the south endzone and in 1995, 90 more luxury suites were added. In the future, more franchises may opt to break ground on domed and retractable-roof venues, but the data indicates it isn't in their best interest, unless every team is on an equal playing field. Until then, the teams with open-field stadiums appear best suited to march on to victory, especially when the games count the most. There are, however, some college football stadiums that are not outdoor. The other two play in indoor stadiums that are home to NFL teams.
Walter P Moore served as lead structural engineer for the new $1.15 billion, 80,000 seat, 3 million square foot, 350 suite retractable roof NFL stadium for the Dallas Cowboys. The project was completed in time for the 2009 football season. The domed roof is supported by 14,100 tons of structural steel, including two 16.5 feet wide by 35 feet deep arched box trusses whose span of 1225 feet makes them the longest of any building structure in the world. Arch truss thrusts of up to 19 million pounds react against a 25 feet wide thrust block constructed above an 18 feet wide by 176 feet long by 71 feet deep slurry wall box foundation.
A 256 feet by 410 feet opening in the 660,000 square feet roof is covered by two translucent tensile fabric membrane retractable panels. A rack-and-pinion drive system opens and closes the bi-parting panels in less than 12 minutes. The $1.1bn stadium has a retractable roof and can host a range of events, including football games, large exhibitions, concerts, seminars, and conferences.
Built on the site of the former Kirov Stadium, it has the capacity to hold more than 67,000 spectators. Yes, Soldier Field did open in 1924 as a major event facility, seating 74,280 for major events like Notre Dame/Northwestern football soon after opening. But pro football eschewed it until 1959, when the Chicago Cardinals played a season there before departing for St. Louis. It wasn't until 1970 that the Chicago Bears moved to Soldier Field from Wrigley Field, and it came with some changes, as the seating capacity was downsized.
A 2003 renovation dramatically altered Soldier Field, keeping the historic exterior while adding a next-generation seating bowl. The large capacity of the Alamodome has been a huge help for the upstart Roadrunners. In their inaugural home game, they managed to attract over 50,000 fans, who were able to fit comfortably into the spacious Alamodome. They also managed to set the record for highest average attendance for a first year college football team, averaging over 35,000 per home game.
The spacious confines of the Alamodome are a major reason for that. In a study done by Pinnacle.com on scoring in the NFL from 2003 to 2015, they found that total points per game scored in outdoor venues was 42.4. Alternatively, in games played in a dome stadium teams combined for 46.2 ppg. While this margin may not seem significant, you have to keep in mind that this is an easily predictable 9% increase in scoring output. In the highly competitive world of the NFL and fantasy sports, no advantage can be ignored.
In fact, this correlation is so strong it is even factored into betting lines in Vegas. During the same period of time the average Over/Under betting lines in Vegas for indoor games was 44.6 ppg while outdoor games were listed, on average, at 41.7. After over four years of construction, the stadium was completed in time for the start of the 1972 season and named Arrowhead Stadium. The Kansas City Chiefs played their first game at Arrowhead Stadium on August 12, 1972 against the St. Louis Cardinals. The stadium was a marvel when it opened due to its great sightlines and it was not multipurpose, like many other stadiums built during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Over 79,000 red and gold seats in three tiers enclosed the entire Astroturf playing surface. Pricing is also a factor when it comes to building domed stadiums. The added price of an extra roof often inflates the budget of a stadium.
A fixed roof can add around $40 million extra to a stadium. Any city or financier of a stadium would not want extra tens or hundreds of millions added to their stadium project because of an "unnecessary" component. It cannot be on the list, because it's not used for current events. Worth noting as well, although the size cannot be matched (and it's unlikely it ever will), the seating capacity is around the rim and hold 45,000. This is less than half every stadium on this list in terms of seated capacity. Every stadium here inflates numbers including some standing.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground for example is a cricket stadium. Cricket always has some standing but it only account for under 5% of capacity. Furthermore, old stadiums such as this used to have a much higher seated capacity because they used to have benches. During the Melbourne Olympics, a baseball game was held in the MCG as a demonstration . Due to bench seating as standing capacity, the crowd was estimated to be 114,000 which held the professional baseball crowd record until the past few years. SoFi Stadium is an unprecedented and unparalleled sports and entertainment destination built in Inglewood, CA, by Los Angeles Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke.
The first indoor-outdoor stadium to be constructed, SoFi Stadium is the home of the Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams. Located on the site of the former Hollywood Park racetrack, the stadium is the centerpiece of a 298-acre mixed-use development featuring retail, commercial office space, a hotel, residential units, and outdoor park spaces. The public share included a state grant and a tax increase on rental cars. Most people at the open-air stadium Thursday night didn't wear masks. There was no vaccine requirement for fans, something Biden has urged sports and entertainment venues to impose.
Many other football stadiums are taking a similarly lax approach to pandemic measures this fall, and that worries health experts. The facility's 151 suites now feature three rows of seating, fully retractable windows, radiant heat and more televisions. Wi-Fi service was enhanced with more than 1,200 access points and better cellular connectivity.
The upper level and lower level concourses were updated with LED lighting, new signage, digital menu boards and increased points of sale. The Alamodome is an anomaly amongst indoor college football stadiums. It was built for the purpose of being an NFL stadium, but San Antonio was never able to attract an NFL team. Opening in 2006, the stadium offers outstanding, unobstructed views for 63,400 fans with the ability to expand to 73,000 for mega-events. The stadium has hosted two Super Bowls , two National College Football Championship games, and the 2017 NCAA Final Four Basketball Championship.
Encompassing over 1.7 million square feet of space, State Farm Stadium has numerous premium seating and space options including 88 lofts and 7,505 club seats. MetLife Stadium was originally envisioned as a retractable-roof stadium, but the owners of the New York Giants and New York Jets, who share the facility, balked at the cost, according to a report about the stadium. With two teams playing on the field, the stadium gets more football-related use than many NFL facilities, noted Lee Slade, a senior principal at Walter P. Moore. The public share includes a 0.5% city sales tax increase, 2% city hotel tax increase, 5% city car-rental tax increase, 10% stadium admissions tax, 3.5% parking tax for stadium events and a $25 million county payment. The Cowboys, thanks in part to their palatial stadium along with league-high levels of revenue and operating income, are the most valuable NFL franchise, according to Forbes, worth an estimated $6.5 billion. Safeco Field, like most ballparks built from the 1990s on, is a "Retro-Modern" style retractable-roof-ballpark.
It incorporates many of the features of ballparks built in the 1970s. It features a brick facade, asymmetrical field dimensions, a natural grass field, spectator sight-lines suited for baseball, and surrounded by city streets and buildings. Rising like a UFO in the West Valley, University of Phoenix Stadium features a unique retractable grass field. The natural grass can be automatically moved outside to soak up plenty of sun while other events are held at the domed stadium. That they keep having to pull out seats says all you need to know. (It's sort of like how New Comiskey missed the retro trend started by Camden Yards).
Instead of opting to build a new stadium, in January 2000, the Packers announced that they would extensively renovate and expand Lambeau Field. Between 2001 and the start of the 2003 season, Lambeau Field underwent a massive renovation to make it more fan and player friendly. The main concourse was expanded, a new upper concourse was added with ramps and elevators, and more restrooms were added. In addition, nearly 12,000 seats were added along the top of the stadium. An atrium, known as "Titletown", was built as part of the new façade of Lambeau Field.
